- On July 11, cSite's newly renovated Task-Based Simulation Training Facility reopened. The space offers leading-edge technology and a streamlined environment where staff physicians, residents and fellows can perfect their technical skills. In the new facility, you can take advantage of basic training boxes to help improve suturing skills or advanced computerized models to practice laparoscopic and endoscopic skills. The following simulators are available: Standard Haptic Lap Mentor II; Lap Mentor Express; URO/PERC Mentor, VirtaMEd HystSim/TURP; GI-BRONCH Mentor; ANGIO Mentor Ultimate and SAGES FLS Training Boxes. This facility is part of the Cleveland Clinic's Center for Multidisciplinary Simulation, CCCMS.
- The ASMBS Foundation announces Philip Schauer, MD, as the recipient of the prestigious Outstanding Achievement Award at their 14th annual event during the ASMBS 28th annual meeting in Orlando, Florida, June 12-17, 2011.

- President of Poland Visits Cleveland Clinic: During his first U.S. visit last December, the president of Poland met with President Obama in Washington, D.C. The next day, President Bronislaw Komorowski flew to visit Cleveland Clinic. Maria Siemionow, MD - who was born and raised in Poland - escorted President Komorowski during his trip to main campus. Following a meeting with leadership, the President toured the Sydell and Arnold Miller Pavilion, and spoke with Polish-born Cleveland Clinic doctors and researchers including Tomasz Rogula, MD, PhD, who is now a surgeon in the Bariatric & Metabolic Institute.
- This Just In from Outpatient Surgery: The Touch, the Feel of Laparoscopy A researcher at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands has developed a prototype for a laparoscopic grasping instrument that sends tangible feedback from the tip of the grasper to the handle to give the surgeon a more accurate feel for his movements. - Jihad H. Kaouk, MD, Director, Center for Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery in the Glickman Urological & Kidney Institute, is the first to hold the Zegarac-Pollock Family Foundation Endowed Chair. The chair is supported by a $2 million gift from the Zegarac-Pollock Family Foundation. The new chair supports research by Dr. Kaouk, who was the first surgeon at Cleveland Clinic to perform laparoscopic surgery through a single, small incision through the navel. He is among only a handful of surgeons across the nation who are pioneering single-port laparoscopy and robotic applications, which create less discomfort for patients and speed their recovery.
- Eren Berber, MD, started a robotic General Surgery program, targeting liver and adrenal cases. He performed the first two robotic liver resections and the first transabdominal adrenalectomy
- Matthew Kroh, MD, performs first scarless removal of a gall bladder, expanding the applications of minimally invasive surgery
